Short Story:

Abhimaan

Subir Kumar was the most famous pop singer. Once he went to a village to pay a visit to his Durga mausi. In the village he meets Uma, the only daughter of a retired school teacher. Uma also had a great talent of singing. An intimacy grew between them and ended in marriage. Subir and Uma gave pleasant surprise to Chandru. Chandru was Subir's friend, philosopher, and guide. Subir and Uma sang a duet on their wedding reception where Uma's talent was admired even by the great music stalwart Brajeshwar Ray. Subir and Uma started singing together professionally and soon Uma gained more popularity then her husband. Uma's success Subir’s ego hurt and caused a drift in their relationship. Subir gave up singing and became an alcoholic. Uma left Subir and went back to her father's place. In the due time Uma gave birth to a still born child. The shock left her in a state of inertness. Subir came the village and took her to the city for proper treatment. However, no medical treatment could do her any good. Brajeshwar Ray advised Subir to start singing again. In Brajeshwar’s opinion Subir’s professional career was the only way to solve the couple’s problems. It was Subir’s music, which reunited the husband and wife.
